Workforce Housing
A big challenge in the New York region as well as in Baltimore is the limited supply of affordable housing to accommodate young professionals, service oriented workers such as police officers, firefighters, teachers, health care workers, retail clerks, and the like. Our firm has been the leading firm in the Long Island region in the design of this product. With many downtowns in the midst of transforming to keep their retail corridors vibrant the introduction of Workforce Housing is often a first step in redevelopment along rail lines and outdated industrial locations.
BHC has completed over two dozen of these projects which totals close to 1,000 workforce housing units. Some of these are within major redevelopments like Wyandanch Village, others are peppered throughout LI in projects like Copiague Commons, Peconic Crossing, Vineyard View, 34 Park Avenue, Port Jefferson Crossing and many more.
In addition, we have recently begun the design of a large Workforce Housing development in Baltimore called ‘Perkins Homes’. Perkins Homes spans eight contiguous blocks, including the original public housing site and two adjacent parcels. As a key component of the PSO (Perkins/Somerset/Old Town) Transformation Plan, Perkins Homes will be reshaped into a community of choice that is inviting, promotes resident pride and unity among neighbors, and is fully integrated into the surrounding area.
